New from Tandem - The Razor cylinder mower
Tandem, the top lawnmower manufacturer in South Africa, recently introduced a new range of mowers to their ever expanding range - the Razor. The Tandem Razor is a cylinder mower, and currently available in a 17" and 20" cutting width.
Difference between Cylinder and Rotary lawnmowers:
Reel or cylinder mowers, those with a set of spiral-cylindrical blades spinning on a horizontal axis. Cutting is by a scissor like action between the moving cylinder blade, and a single stationary bottom blade.
Rotary mowers, whose blades spin horizontally on a vertical driveshaft. Cutting is due to a horizontal blade hitting the grass at a high speed.

Special! KÄRCHER HD 5/12 C
This cold-water pressure washer with alternating current drive unit is the ideal entry-level model for commercial end users.
The upright HD 5/12 C boasts impressive mobility, compactness and a height-adjustable shaped aluminium push handle. The advantage of the push handle is that it can easily be adjusted to the operator's body height without using tools. In the extended position, the unit's generous stowage facilities ensure that accessories are always ready to hand and put away safely. In the retracted position, this handy unit can easily be stowed in any estate car or service vehicle.
It boasts familiar KÄRCHER features such as a full shock-resistant plastic covering that protects the high-pressure pump from damage and soiling. Other very good features are an electric cable retractor (with plug lock) and a nozzle compartment arranged practically on the back of the unit.
The cleaner comes with a three-way nozzle that enables the water jet to be adjusted quickly and easily. You can choose between a high-pressure pencil jet, a high-pressure fan jet (25°) and a low-pressure fan jet. The low-pressure fan jet (40°) is used for dispensing cleaning agent.
The cleaning agent metering valve enables cleaning agent to be mixed continuously with the high-pressure jet.
The large-volume oil container, which is very important for ensuring that the unit is always adequately lubricated, can be checked very easily from outside through an oil level inspection glass. The three-piston axial pump with stainless steel pistons and a brass cylinder head guarantees a long service life and low susceptibility to faults. The special feature of this pump is that both the water inlet and the high-pressure outlet are made of brass, which makes them highly resistant to fracture and corrosion.

Create your own oasis
Maximize your enjoyment of your outdoor space this spring and summer by creating an outdoor area that the entire family will love. Why wait until you can squeeze a vacation into your schedule to escape to Mauritius or Bali? If you can just walk outdoors and dive into your pool or climb into a hammock and fall asleep listening to the rustle of palm fronds, you're there. Mentally, anyway.
The process of maintaining and beautifying your garden must be part of the enjoyment, and the correct choice of gardening equipment can save you hassles, time and money.
What size mower?
The type of lawnmower you use depends on the size of your lawn. You will also have to decide between an electric or petrol driven, rotary or cylinder, and a push, self-propelled, or hover type machine. Many people walk into a store and buy the first machine that catches the eye. The wrong choice of machines could lead to premature failure or endless problems if not designed for the task of your particular lawn area. Keep in mind that the wider a machine cuts, the quicker you will finish the job at hand, saving time, and usage of the machine.
For plots or larger gardens the perfect solution will be to use a ride-on mower, three wheeler mower, push type or self propelled machine, tractor drawn slasher, or an ATV mower. Different sizes engines and cutting widths are available and it is best to arrange for a demonstration on your property before you decide on a machine.
A trimmer will be necessary for those edges around the flowerbeds, against walls and next to the paved areas. You will have a choice between electric, with either bottom or top mount motor, or petrol. Remember always to use eye protection when trimming.
Brushcutters are also an option when the terrain is uneven. A brushcutter has a straight shaft and differs from an edge trimmer in that it has a solid blade, rather than a nylon line. However, many brushcutters are available with both kinds of cutting head, for different kinds of application.
What to consider when making the purchase?
“You pay for what you get”. The more expensive a lawnmower or trimmer, the better it is. But the most important factor is to select the correct product for your specific application. Here a specialist dealer can assist you with your decision. The wrong product may cost you more in the long run, due to quicker replacement, and more maintenance and repairs.
Imagine using a small motor car on a 4x4 trail, or a racing bicycle in a mountain bike race.
A ride-on mower is of no use in a garden where you can’t even turn with it.
It is also important to purchase a brand of lawnmower that is well supported with after sales service, and comply with SABS regulations. Electric driven lawnmowers must be fitted with a single blade and a brake on the motor as per SABS regulations. The selection of electric cable is also important. Length and thickness must be suitable for the size of the motor. Your warranty coverage is influenced by incorrect cable usage.
Important considerations when selecting a new edge trimmer or brushcutter:
-What do you want to do with the product
-If purchasing a trimmer, decide between electric or petrol driven
-Is it a well known brand with adequate back-up and spare parts availability?
-Select the type of cutting tool for your brushcutter
-Always “test drive” the product – ergonomics is important. Consider the length, weight distribution, and ease of use
What about after sale service?
Lawnmower Specialist dealers sell new products at excellent value for money, as well as replacement parts on most recognized brands of mowers and trimmers.
They all have workshops on their premises, and offer warranty repairs where appointed as agents, general repair work as well as servicing. Specialist dealers all service what they sell! You will find the best advice on the correct machinery for your specific application from these specialists. Most mass merchants offer lower end products with no after sales service.
Taking care of your products
Lawnmowers, trimmers and other outdoor power equipment need to be serviced regularly, at least once a year for longevity. Regular maintenance at home in between these services will also avoid premature or unexpected breakage. Unlike other household appliances, they work under severe conditions. Unevenly worn blades cause vibration. Grass clippings penetrate areas and block ventilation. Dust could penetrate engines, especially when air filters are dirty.
Unfortunately most people do not maintain their products, and only take it for a “service” to a lawnmower specialist dealer when it does not want to operate anymore! In case of a motor vehicle, you don’t wait to take it for a service when it does not want to start anymore.
- Service your machine regularly.
- Always use genuine replacement parts
- Always mix the fuel according to manufacturers specifications when using two-stroke mixtures.
- Use your machine with the deflector or nylon head guard on trimmers/brushcutters
- The head guard has the dual purpose of protecting the operator, those around you as well as windows and cars, and also keeps the nylon line at the correct length, as longer line will damage the unit through excessive stress on the head, gearbox, shaft and engine.
Living expenses are constantly on the rise, and the option of adding value to your home is best. Create an oasis where you can relax and have fun.

Wood cutting made easy!
Chainsaws are most commonly used in logging activities such as felling, delimbing and bucking. They are also used by tree surgeons to fell trees and remove branches and foliage. Other applications include cutting firebreaks, rescue operations by fire brigade, and the harvesting of firewood.
Chainsaws consist of a power unit, petrol or electric, a guide bar, and the cutting chain.
There are various types of chainsaws available for different applications. Your options will include arborist, hobby, semi-professional and professional models. Lengths of the guide bar and chain varies, as well as the size of chain. The top brands include more safety features and operator protection.
Chainsaws can be dangerous, and serious injuries can arise from incorrect use. Protective clothing should always be worn while operating them. Chains must be kept sharp to perform well, this can be done with a round file or your dealer can sharpen the chain for you.
Chainsaws are specialist equipment, and should be purchased from specialists. Advice on the correct model for your application, as well as advice on the safe operation should be given obtained when purchasing.
Another useful tool to have around is an axe. The axe is an ancient tool used to shape, split and cut wood. Most modern axes have steel heads and wooden or fiberglass handles. Modern axes are specialized by use, size and form.
Hatchets are lightweight axes with a short handle which makes them easy to carry around. They are also suitable for indoor use for example as a kitchen axe. The heads are thin head and the back of head can also be used as a hammer for lighter work.
Hand axes are slightly longer than hatchets and ideal for trimming trees and other general purpose work. The head is equipped with a thin blade and, together with the longer handle, provides a longer swing and a deeper cut than a hatchet.
Felling axes are heavier axes with longer handles and a thinner edge, to cut easily into the wood when felling trees.
Splitting axes have a special wedge-shaped head, and with it’s weight, provides easier penetration when forcing the wood apart. Mauls are heavy sledge hammers which are used to drive poles or, together with a splitting wedge, to split very hard and thick wood.

Article on Briggs & Stratton:-
Briggs & Stratton Corporation will begin celebrating its centennial anniversary at the start of 2008. Punctuated by numerous festivities in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, home of its corporate headquarters, as well as at its locations worldwide, the Company plans to celebrate its rich legacy of innovation and continuing success. “The Company’s 100th anniversary is a rare opportunity to pull from the Company’s history – the innovation, accomplishments, identity, culture, values and underlying success and to set the stage for the future,” says Laura Timm, Director of Corporate Communications for Briggs & Stratton.
Briggs & Stratton’s vision of The Power Within is an important element of the Company’s 100th Anniversary. This vision exemplifies the core values of Briggs & Stratton’s customers – people who have a can-do spirit, get satisfaction from a job well done, and pass their knowledge to the next generation. According to the Company’s Chairman, President, and CEO John Shiely, “The Power Within forms the cornerstone for the values associated with our roadmap for value creation at Briggs & Stratton. In every corner of our Company, in every department, in every location, you can see the power within us at work.”
The Power Within has been present throughout Briggs & Stratton’s long history with the start of the informal partnership between inventor Stephen F. Briggs and investor Harold M. Stratton in 1908. The Company first purchased the Motor Wheel from A.O. Smith, which was used as a power source for bicycles and the Briggs & Stratton flyer. Later, with the development of the stationary small engine, the Company went on to provide power for people in every aspect in life. This included powering washing machines, providing assistance during World War II, and even developing a gasoline/electric hybrid vehicle.
This continued innovation and dedication to The Power Within has led to Briggs & Stratton being the world’s largest producer of gasoline engines for outdoor power equipment. Its wholly owned subsidiary Briggs & Stratton Power Products Group LLC is North America’s number one manufacturer of portable generators and pressure washers, and is a leading designer, manufacturer and marketer of lawn and garden and turf care through its wholly owned subsidiary Simplicity Manufacturing, Inc. and its Simplicity®, Snapper®, Ferris® and Murray® brands. Briggs & Stratton products are designed, manufactured, marketed and serviced in over 100 countries on all seven continents.
