Simplify your mowing experience!

We will be introducing into our Tandem range for the 2011/2012 gardening season, two x Enviro Mulching Mowers
a)     will be a Torx 160cc petrol model – with the OHV + mulching facility &
b)    will be the Executive 2600w unit + mulching facility + 35m cable

We believe Tandem has an absolute winner in their petrol & electric mulching mowers – WHY – because previously there was a mulchmower which failed to grab National customers imagination for one reason only – 60/70% of all sales are made in Gauteng where there is a grass called ‘’KIKUYU’’ – now this is a creeping growing grass & if you Mulch continuously, there is a possibility of a mulch build up or Thatch – which could lead to crickets/ants/insects etc meaning brown patches – not good. However, for the coastal areas, thatch is not a concern.

Tandem have overcome this – by inserting a removable MULCH PLUG into the mowers – allowing for its removal & insertion of your Aerovac grass box when the mulch plug is out – which means you can Mulch 5 or 6 times or as many times as you wish –then by removing the plug you are able to Aerovac your lawn – removing all possibilities of Thatch – then start the process over.

Not only do you have a working lawnmower but it has the additional features of :-
a)     not collecting grass saves time – just push & cut
b)    by placing mulch onto the soil you will be retaining moisture – good for healthy lawns
c)     by placing mulch onto the soil you will retard weed growth
d)    the top of all grasses are rich in nitrogen – so if you lop off the top of your grass & mulch it into the lawn – you are fertilizing while cutting.

Image with the grassbox - remove box, insert plug effortlessly and start mulching!

Get your grass growing today!

There are two types of fertilizer spreaders, broadcast and drop. Spreaders are used to fertilize, seed and even for melting ice. Choose tow or push models that get the job done; solid construction and reliable design ensure even and continuous flow and spread of materials, eliminating “streaks.”

Broadcast spreaders (also called rotary spreaders) cover a lot of square meters quickly, and handles larger loads. The material drops from the hopper onto a spinning disc that disperses it over the lawn. Overlap the coverage to avoid missing any spots – the further away from the spreader the material is thrown, the lighter the coverage. What you gain in coverage you may sacrifice in control.

Drop spreaders can easily cover straight lines with little waste, but they must be used with care. Since the material drops straight down in a width equal to that of the hopper, striping can occur if the entire area is not covered equally. Striping is the distinctive pattern created when you miss or overlap rows.

We have various models available in different sizes. Both types are also available as attachments to ride-on mowers and ATV’s. For sport fields we also have a tractor mounted option.

Gardeners Gold - Why Garden Shredders?

Gardeners are often seen carting away loads of garden refuse to dump sites. All household refuse ends up in the bin. If you think your household and garden rubbish are only fit for the landfill site, think again.

The fact is that a quarter of everything you throw away could be shredded and composted to make your garden flourish – saving you money and helping to preserve the environment! Most garden and kitchen scraps can be recycled into a useful soil conditioner, saving money on commercial products.

Garden shredders are used to create space, save time and money. They free the gardener of large volumes of cuttings and plant trimmings as the volume of the material is greatly reduced during shredding. The shredded material can then be turned into compost or mulch, hence less fertilizer needs to be purchased.

Mulching protects the valuable layer of humus from all weather conditions, preventing washing out due to heavy rain and providing insulation when it is hot or frosty. It reduces evaporation by a third. Mulching improves the soil structure. Micro-organisms slowly break down the plant trimmings used, to create new humus. Weed’ seeds are unable to sprout as they are shielded from the light.

Compost is the world’s oldest and most natural form of fertilizer. It can be produced in any garden. Compost returns lost nutrients and trace elements to the soil, and revitalizes soil life. If organic materials are shredded, mixed and aerated properly, they decompose into high-quality fertilizer. The better the composition - the mix of “green” nitrogenous material and “brown” plant trimmings containing carbon – the better the fertilizing qualities and therefore also the compost.

Materials that are ideal for composting are:
All organic, decomposable material from the garden and home such as green waste, harvesting leftovers, flowers, shrubs, grass cuttings, leaves, cuttings from trees, bushes and hedges, kitchen scraps(fruit and vegetable), tea, coffee, eggs, limited amounts of wood shavings or sawdust.

Not recommended for composting are:
Weeds with a lot of seeds or roots, diseased plants, paper and cardboard.

Totally unsuitable:
Metallic materials, glass, plastics.

Garden shredders are available in various sizes with electric motors or petrol engines. The branch diameter that can be handled differs in models.

The Main Ingredients of a Garden Shed

The garden is a place of relaxation and free time, the green oasis of personal well-being. You can protect and nurture a piece of nature with your own hands. To get your garden into the right shape, and keep it there, you need the correct aids to make it easier. Let us look at what ingredients a typical Garden Shed should include.

A garden consists out of different sections. You will find flowerbeds, a paved area or driveway and a large lawn in almost every garden. To keep your garden in tiptop shape, you firstly need a lawnmower and edge cutter for the lawn.

The type of lawnmower depends on the size of your lawn. You will also have to decide between an electric or petrol driven, rotary or cylinder, and a push, self-propelled or hover type machine. Many people walk into a store and buy the first machine that catches the eye. The wrong choice of machines could lead to premature failure or endless problems if not designed for the task of your particular lawn area.

For plots or larger gardens the perfect solution will be to use a ride-on mower, or heavy duty self-propelled walk behind mower. Different sizes are available and it is best to arrange for a demonstration on your property before you decide on a machine.

A trimmer will be necessary for those edges around the flowerbeds, against walls and next to the paved areas. You will have a choice between electric or petrol, and bottom or top mount motors. Remember always to use eye protection when trimming. For small gardens you also find manual grass shears.

Leaves laying on your property can also be an eyesore. To keep this tidy you must use a garden vacuum/blower combination. These appliances switch easily from blower to vacuum. It is easier to blow all the leaves onto a heap, even out of the flowerbeds, and then suck them up with the vacuum attachment. Some machines shred the leaves into fine pieces, which can be added to the compost heap. Alternatively you can set your lawnmower on high adjustment and then use it to pick up the leaves.

An important part of every gardener’s tools is the hedge shear. To control wild growth, shape a bush, or cut a hedge into shape, you can either use a manual shear or purchase a more sophisticated electric or petrol-driven model. Loppers and telescopic branch pruners are also handy items for the thicker and unreachable branches. A chainsaw can make life easier on a plot or very large garden.

Two other useful appliances to have around the house and garden are the Garden Shredder/Chipper and a High Pressure Washer. Both these are multi-purpose machines. A shredder/chipper can be used to chop kitchen refuse like vegetables or garden clippings into fine pieces which can then be added to the compost heap for mulch.

High-pressure washers can be used to clean driveways and other paved areas, as well as to clean vehicles and walls. Detergents can be added and some models have adjustable settings for the spraying pressure.

Other ingredients you need to fill your garden shed with and make your garden beautiful include good quality secateurs for pruning, a fertilizer spreader, and a pressure sprayer for insecticides and other fluid type applications. When purchasing any of these, please make sure that the parts can be replaced e.g. blade on secateurs, or nozzles on sprayer. Please ensure that these parts are available from where you purchased the item.

The final ingredient for this perfect recipe is a mixture of odd garden tools and accessories. No garden can do without a spade, fork, pick, general hand tools, hosepipe with hose reel and sprayers, and a wheelbarrow.

For advice on which products will suit your application the best, contact Lawnmower Clinic Pretoria. We offer free advice on all of the products necessary in your specific garden, information on safety precautions, as well as spare parts or repairs and service on these appliances.

Storing your equipment

Whether it’s the off-season or other circumstances prevent operating your engine-powered equipment for more than 30 days, special steps need to be taken to protect the engine.

The first step in preparing an engine for storage is performing all of the suggested daily maintenance items, such as cleaning the engine and checking the air filter. Next, drain the fuel from the fuel tank and carburetor float chamber. This is one of the most important steps in preparing an engine for storage. Over time the volatile components of fuel evaporate and the fuel becomes stale. Stale fuel makes starting the engine difficult, if not impossible, when the machine is taken out of storage. Although it is usually suggested to drain the fuel, filling the tank with new fuel and adding a fuel stabilizer is another option for preventing a stale situation.

To prevent corrosion in the cylinder bore during storage, remove the spark plug and inject a few drops of oil through the spark plug hole. Gently pull the recoil starter knob two or three times before the spark plug is placed back in the spark plug hole. Additionally, pull the recoil starter knob until the resistance is felt, and leave it in that position. End the process with a final engine cleaning before placing a protective cover over the unit and storing it in a dry place.

When returning the engine to service, ensure the oil viscosity is adequate for the temperatures expected. Check the fuel lines and filter, making sure they are still secure and have not cracked. Be sure that the throttle, choke and governor linkages move freely before starting the engine.

The initial start for an engine coming out of storage may be slow and there could be smoke for a few minutes until any oil in the cylinder burns off. If the engine fails to start, check the spark plug since it may have been fouled by the oil added to the cylinder before the machine was stored. Clean or replace the spark plug before attempting to start the engine again.

Whether you’re preparing an engine for storage, adapting it to the weather or just keeping an eye out for warning signs, giving an engine the attention it deserves will go a long way toward keeping it out of trouble
